Last week, we asked what you thought about the city’s decision to revamp San Pedro Street into a completely pedestrian-friendly, open-mall layout.

A lot of you had opinions about this anticipated move — here’s what you had to say.

A lot of praise

“I am absolutely in favor of this idea. As a lifelong, 70 year resident of San Jose, this is one of the best improvements I’ve seen. It will dress up our downtown area, bringing in more foot traffic and allowing residents and visitors to patronize our business and make a safe and pleasant environment is what we’ve been needing.” - Kathy M.

“MORE OF THESE PLEASE. We need to start making our city more walkable!” - @amani_iwontsayitagain_marie

“Yes love the open feel of San Pedro Square. I don’t like First and Second street in downtown San Jose. The light rail and cars are noisy and outdoor seating at restaurants is a no-go. This is what people love — to eat and enjoy time outside since we have beautiful weather.” - Henry + Delfina S.

“I remember going here before the Market existed [...] Look at the street now. We’ve come so far.” - @jasminejsanjose

“I think I should back my elected officials as they do their jobs. I have not been privy to the studies behind this decision (nor do I want to be).” - Mary M.

“That’s ok, hope that brings more business to the restaurants.” - @short_mle

Some hesitation

“I’m all for making this a pedestrian friendly stroll but PLEASE don’t allow outdoor TVs. That would interrupt quiet conversations at the tables, as well as just being tacky. At San Pedro Square, we always try to find the table outside, furthest from any TV - which is hard to do. If folks want to watch a game, stay inside (where it’s deafening with the multiple TVs, chatter and general kitchen clatter). Please provide a beautiful, shady, quiet place for those of us who enjoy dining without the cacophony invading our space!” - Cindy G.

“If we don’t find a way to deal with homelessness, it isn’t gonna look this pretty...” - @escalanteluis320
