Each year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of January — Jan. 16 this year. The theme for this year is “Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems,” according to The King Centera nonprofit founded by MLK’s wife, Coretta Scott King, to continue Dr. King’s legacy.

If you have time to dedicate to our community, here are four local volunteer opportunities:

  • Second Harvest of Silicon Valley | Volunteer at the local Cypress or Brennan warehouses and distribute or sort food.
  • Habitat for Humanity | Learn how to build and repair homes, and volunteer at its ReStore.
  • The Health Trust | Pack, drive, and deliver for Meals on Wheels, or assist with its HIV/AIDS services.
  • CityTeam | Help with community outreach, homelessness resources, and housing programs.

Or, participate in:

  • The Dream of a King” | Times vary | Children’s Discovery Museum | Storyteller Diane Ferlatte will bring the late civil rights leader’s story to life through history, culture, and music.
