May is almost here, so we’re gearing up for National Bike Month — which was established in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists to showcase the benefits of biking. To celebrate, let’s get pumped up with some local biking resources, trails, and events.
🚲 Getting the gear
Whether it be the purchase of a new bike, or some touch-up maintenance, these local nonprofits + small businesses are here to help you get cycling.
- Good Karma Bikes — for every bike sold, this non-profit will provide free service or a bike to those in need.
- San José Bike Clinic — this volunteer-run shop hosts regular bike workshops to educate you on how to fix your own bike.
- Hyland Family Bicycles — along with selling bikes + biking accessories, this family-owned shop offers 24-48 hour turnaround on most repairs.
🚲 Where to ride
Did you know that San Jose is home to one of the nation’s largest urban trail networks, with 61 miles of bike-friendly trails?
For an easy ride, cycle through the 2.4 mile Martial Cottle Park Loop — or go the distance along the 15.6 mile Los Gatos Creek Trail running from Fruitdale to Los Gatos. Navigate to the city’s website for more trails to explore.
