In 10 days, San Jose will host the 2023 US Figure Skating Championships — which will be held at the SAP Center from Monday, Jan. 23, to Sunday, Jan. 29.
This will be the fourth time that our city will host the championships — and this week, city officials held a flag-raising and proclamation ceremony to honor the history of figure skating in our city.
Many legendary figure skaters have graced our arena in past US Figure Skating Championships, and who knows — you could be witness to the next Michelle Kwan.
This installment across from the SAP Center memorializes local figure skating champs.

⛸️ The host with the most
In the past years we’ve hosted — 1996, 2012, and 2018 — there’s been no shortage of historic moments made on the great 408’s ice.
1996 — San Jose-born and raised skater Rudy Galindo won the men’s singles champion title, becoming the oldest male national champion in 70 years at the age of 26. A 15-year-old Michelle Kwan also became the youngest national champion in 32 years, since San Jose native Peggy Fleming won in 1964.
2012 — At 13 years old, recent Olympic champion Nathan Chen became the youngest junior men’s champion in recent history.
2018 — Nathan Chen won his second consecutive US Figure Skating Championship, securing 40 points over his closest competitor.
Psst... The 127 qualifiers will also be practicing at Sharks Ice on South Tenth Street, so you can check the practice groups and schedule if you want to catch certain skaters.

Lunar New Year is upon us, San Jose. 🏮
Though its official dates vary across different Asian cultures, the Lunar New Year is a celebration of the start of spring and a new year on the lunisolar calendar. 🌕
Let’s see where you can ring in the Year of the Rabbit (or the Year of the Cat in Vietnam) around the great 408.
🧧 Lunar New Year Festival | Friday, Jan. 20-Sunday, Jan. 22 | History Park | Watch lion dancing + martial arts performances, and enjoy games, photo booths, and a flower market.
🧧 Lunar New Year at SJMA | Saturday, Jan. 21 | San José Museum of Art | Participate in art-making activities, cultural demonstrations, and more.
🧧 Lunar New Year-Tet & Moon Festival | Friday, Jan. 27-Sunday, Jan. 29 | Eastridge Center | Enjoy live music, a fashion + magic show, and food, drink, and merchandise vendors.
Editor’s pick: Tomorrow, I’m going to the opening show of “Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition” at Oakridge Mall. While I’m not entirely sure what it entails, the promotions look similar to the “Beyond Van Gogh” immersive experience that toured here not too long ago. Stay tuned for more coverage... 👀
