Calling all stargazers. We’ve put together a handy guide of this year’s celestial events so you won’t miss a thing. Grab your calendar, mark down these dates, and start planning your 2023 night sky viewing adventures.

💫 Meteor showers

If you missed the Quadrantid meteor shower on January 3 and 4, fear not — there will be plenty more showers to catch this year. Here’s a rundown of what to expect:
  • Lyrids: April 22-23
  • Eta Aquarids: May 6-7
  • Delta Aquarids: July 28-29
  • Alpha Capricornids: July 30-31
  • Perseids: August 12-13
  • Draconids: October 7
  • Orionids: October 21-22
  • Southern Taurids: November 4-5
  • Northern Taurids: November 11-12
  • Leonids: November 17-18
  • Geminids: December 13- 14
  • Ursids: December 21-22

🌕 Full moons and supermoons

It may technically be the Year of the Water Rabbit, but it’s also the moon’s year to shine. While most years there are 12 full moons, 2023 will welcome 13 (two will occur in August). Here’s the full list, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
  • February 5: Snow moon
  • March 7: Worm moon
  • April 6: Pink moon
  • May 5: Flower moon
  • June 3: Strawberry moon
  • July 3: Buck moon
  • August 1: Sturgeon moon
  • August 30: Blue moon
  • September. 29: Harvest moon
  • October 28: Hunter’s moon
  • November 27: Beaver moon
  • December 26: Cold moon

  • The time has come to officially welcome our 66th mayor. Mayor Matt Mahan’s inauguration ceremony will take place at the Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. — followed by a reception. Limited capacity is available, so register on Eventbrite before seats are taken up. 🎤

  • A new restaurantthat has yet to be named — is coming soon to Santana Row. The Bacchus Management Group, which owns several Michelin-rated restaurants, recently signed a lease at the former site of Sino. Legacy
  • Local activist and founder of Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence, Bea Robinson Mendez, died last week at the age of 88. As a prominent community change maker, Bea also founded the Chicano Coalition and was a founding member of the Silicon Valley Latino Democratic Forum. May her legacy live on. 🕊️ (San José Spotlight)

  • The Office of Cultural Affairs recently announced its 2023 Creative Ambassadors: Yoon Chung Han, Elba Raquel, Patron Paule, and Suhita Shirodkar. These artists will be tasked with creating a creative community project, like one of last year’s ambassadors, Ricardo Cortez. Congratulations to all. 👏
Health
  • Here’s some good news — the Santa Clara County health department found that the number of flu and COVID-19 infections remain low, and may be dwindling. At this time last year, our weekly average of COVID-19 cases was 5,308, compared to this week’s count of 238 as of Wednesday. (San José Spotlight)
Plan Ahead
  • This Sunday, Jan. 22, the San Francisco 49ers will host an official watch party at San Pedro Social in downtown for their playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys. The party begins at 2:30 p.m., and fans can participate in raffles, giveaways, and more. Find details on the 49ers’ Facebook event page. 🏈
Travel
  • Attention, lovebirds. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Zip Air Tokyo is offering flights from San Jose for $214 — but travel must be between Feb. 1-Feb. 28. It may be short notice but... this might be the best date idea ever. ✈️
