Last night, Mayor Sam Liccardo announced that the City Council unanimously approved his June Budget Message, which recommended a budget of $5.3 billion for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. That budget — which focuses on everything from fighting homelessness, boosting local economy, and improving public safety — is set to go into effect Fri., July 1. 🏛️

🚨 Public safety
Increased funding for an addition of 16 SJPD foot patrol officers and an incentive program offering $10,000 to trained officers willing to transfer to San Jose.
About $1 million for quick-build, safety improvements at dangerous intersections + streets including Branham Ln. and Monterey Rd., Cropley Ave., Kooser Rd., and several others in Downtown District 3 neighborhoods.
🏙️ City infrastructure + housing
Additional $150,000 for the Downtown Streets Team (DST) to expand their team and offer transitional employment to 45 new members.
$400,000 to fund the design, equipment + fee costs of permanently closing San Pedro St.
$580,000 to rehouse individuals living along Guadalupe River Trail — as well as the 46 residents living between Taylor and Santa Clara Streets.
🤝 Community
$2.165 million for San Jose Public Library to open13 branches in lower-resourced neighborhoods on Sundays.
Nearly $1.2 million to go towards boosting small businesses — which includes creating a city position to support East San Jose businesses.
$560,000 to the forthcoming African American Cultural Center to build affordable housing, a community meeting space, and retail + office space.
♻️ Sustainability
$3.6 million to plant 1,000 trees a year — in an effort to cool + beautify our city.
Veggielution to get additional funding for trees, picnic benches, and irrigation at Emma Prusch Park, and a down-payment for exhibit and park upgrades.

This Sat., June 18, the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose’s 2022 Legacy for Children Award will be given to Cynt Marshall, CEO of the Dallas Mavericks + champion for children.
Funds raised from the event (themed “Keep on Playing: An Evening for Grownups at the Purple Museum”) will support the museum’s 2022-23 Restoration and Revitalization Initiativewhich aims to restore operations and capacity to pre-COVID levels.
After opening on May 10, Fire Station 37 in Willow Glen will finally get the fanfare it deserves. The carbon-neutral facility will have its official ribbon-cutting ceremony today at 10:30 a.m. Residents can watch the event via livestream. 🚒
Traffic
Within the next two weeks, the City’s Department of Transportation’s corrective maintenance programwill begin with its temporary pavement repairs on select streets. The goal is to pave 250 miles of streets this year, and 1,552 miles by 2028. 🚧

We just can’t espresso how excited we are for this… Next Monday, Voyager Craft Coffee will celebrate the soft opening of its third cafe — located at 20807 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Cupertino. Treat yourself to 20% off their merchandise during their first week of operation. ☕
It doesn’t get fresher than this. A highly-anticipated farm-to-table restaurant called MOHI Farmis coming to the Sunsweet development on E. Third St. in Morgan Hill. The eatery will source its seasonal produce from a local farmers market + is expected to open this fall. 🍅 (The Mercury News)

The San Jose Barracuda recently announced that they will be the first team in the AHL to serve tribal beer at their arena. Mad River Brewing Co. — located in Humboldt County + owned by the Yurok Tribe — will be the sponsor for the Barracuda’s East Bar at the new Tech CU Arena. 🍻
Earthquakes fans, you’re going to like this… Major League Soccer + Apple announced a 10-year, $2.5 billion partnership. As a result, Apple TV will broadcast all MLS games starting in 2023. While most fans will have to pay to watch next season’s matches, season ticket holders will receive a free subscription. ⚽
Outdoors
Remember when we asked you to help name a community park? The East San Jose pocket park has landed on Mariposa Park as the official name + it will be fully funded by Caltrans’ Clean California Grant. The parkis expected to break ground this summer. 🌳
Award
The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) recently received a nearly $1 million, three-year grant to provide growth opportunities for LatinX + Latina-identifying students in STEM. The SCCOE recently completed a pilot project where teachers from local school districts explored culturally-relevant + engaging teaching practices with specific emphasis on these students. 🖥️
