Hello Wednesday.

June 29 2022

The ice cream of the crop

Trying to beat the summer heat? Here’s the scoop. 🍨

It’s no secret that San Jose has some pretty amazing dessert parlors + creameries. From traditional frozen yogurt to Mexican paletas, here’s a guide to the most iconic ice creameries in the area.

🍦 Instagram-worthy

Cauldron Ice Cream has perfected its gorgeous, rose-cut ice cream scoops. Top it off with its signature puffle cone, then call it day. Pro tip: Can’t decide on a flavor? You can’t miss with “The Cauldron” — vanilla + cinnamon topped with Oreo crumbs.

SomiSomi serves the famous Korean “ah-boong” — ice cream served in a fish-shaped waffle cone. Fun fact: It offers soft-serve swirls that mix two flavors, but the flavors change every week to keep you on your toes.

🍦 Keeping it fresh

Sweet Fix Creamery’s ice cream is known for being locally made + all natural — no artificial flavors, preservatives, or additives. It also carries some fun flavors like black sesame, sugar + spice, and Mexican hot chocolate. Try this: Go bananas for its signature flavor, Banana Brownie.

🍦 A taste of Mexico

Switch it up with a refreshing paleta (popsicle) or other speciality frozen treats from La Original Paletería with traditional Mexican flavors including chongo zamoranos (seasoned milk with a cheese-like consistency), cajeta (caramel), and gansito (a chocolate, strawberry cake snack).

🍦 Finding new forms

Chop, chop… Get a rolled ice cream experience at Icicles, where you can watch your ice cream be made and rolled on a cold plate. And, did we mention the unlimited toppings? Fun fact: The Willow Glen location was the very first store in this chain.

Did we miss one of your favorite local ice cream spots? Let us know.

POST OF THE DAY

San Jose gone wild

reddit

📸 u/slow-lauris

Crikey, look at the size of those corvids… 👀

Local artist Laurel Picklum shared some cool new prints showing wild animals in iconic San Jose locations — vultures at the Stephen’s Meat sign, a mountain lion at the N. First St. Post Office, and a hawk striking a pigeon along E. Santa Clara St.

Surprisingly, Laurel shared that the Santa Clara St. piece was based on an actual interaction they saw while waiting for the bus. 🦅

You can snag your own copy of these prints from Laurel’s online art shop.

THE WRAP

Editor’s pick: Recently, I saw a campaign shared by the San Jose Earthquakes to bring women’s soccer to the Bay Area. Having been a Portland Thorns fan for several years, I would be thrilled to see a NWSL team come to town. What do you think? Would you like to cheer on another SJ soccer team? Let us know.

Also, I gotta shoutout Jessica T., our SJtoday intern, for her fabulous work on today’s cool story about ice cream. 👏
