Tattoo shops in San Jose, CA

klugtattoo

In the Bay Area, inked up arms and legs probably won’t make you do a double-take. Shoot, you may even have one or two yourself.

But whether it’s your first or 20th time getting inked — we’ve rounded up a list of some of the most popular local parlors + artists to consult for your next tattoo.

StateofGrace

Horitomo specializes in Japanese design, otherwise known as “irezumi.” | Photo via @stateofgracetattoo

State of Grace | 📍221 Jackson St.

This nationally-renown shop in the heart of Japantown boasts diverse talents and a strong sense of San Jose pride. Check out Sefa Samatua for Polynesian designs or Mike Suarez for some black + gray Chicano styles. And if you’re willing to wait a few years (yes, his waitlist is indeed that long) Horitomo is the man to get tattooed by, just ask VICE.

Soul Imagez | 📍2298 S. Bascom Ave., Campbell

This shop is great for those looking for minimalist styles with great attention to detail — think dainty flowers + cursive lines. Soul Imagez also hosts walk-in Wednesdays + weekends with different deals that you can follow on their Instagram.

The Holy Scythe | 📍1043 Park Ave.

Looking for bold and bright? Ask for Jeff Leopard if you’re wanting American traditional tattoos, or Matthew Tillman for some sick black + gray styling. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred — and the shop minimum is $100.

Current Tattooing | 📍48-B Race St.

This shop stays current by hosting art shows and insane in-house talent. Ask for Baylie Simons for amazing watercolor work, or Casey Walsh for colorful traditionalist designs. Can’t decide? Drop a quarter in their “Refuse to Choose” vending machine and receive a random $100 design — you get whatcha get, as they say.

Black Lantern | 📍3155 S. Bascom Ave., Campbell

Like the name suggests — it’s dark, but demands a spotlight. Michael Ascarie creates ghostly, abstract portraiture, and Chase Weggeland designs dynamic, pop culture pieces. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can check specific artist availability online.
