We know the question on your mind, San Joseans — when’s it going to get warm again? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for March, April, and May. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what spring will bring.

Reminder: The first day of spring is on Monday, March 20.

🌨️ Precipitation

Expect slightly more precipitation. San Jose has a 33-40% chance of seeing higher than average rainfall amounts this spring (think ~20 days).

☀️ Drought

Drought conditions are expected to persist but improve this season, thanks in part to January’s storms causing reservoir and snow pack levels to rise.

March into this season

Typically in San Jose, March’s temperatures fluctuate between an average low of 43° and high of 62°, but expect to see more rainfall this year. The most rainfall comes during this month, and averages around 9.8 days. Pro tip: Get an extra hour of daylight when daily saving time begins Sunday, March 12, at 2 a.m.

April’s outlook

This month’s weather won’t deviate much from March’s, with average high and low temps between 66° and 45°. There will likely be less rainfall, and more sunshine with an average daily maximum UV index of 5 — so stay protected with sunscreen on your Alum Rock hikes.

It’s gonna be May

Temps continue to rise as our daily high averages around 75° — which we think is perfect hiking weather. The 53° nightly temps and 12 mph winds also make May nights the beginning of our opening-a-window-right-before-bed season (whenever it’s not too windy).
