💀 The history

Día de los Muertos, aka Day of the Dead, is a holiday traditionally celebrated November 1-2. It’s believed that its roots go back 3,000 years to the time of the Aztecs, and it is celebrated in communities with Mexican heritage to this day.

An important distinction: this is not a “Mexican version of Halloween.” In this “celebration of life,” participants are reunited with the souls of dead relatives + loved ones. The honored dead are often given offerings at gravesites or ofrendas (alters) at home, and are celebrated with festivals.

We’ve got a proposition for you

This week, vote-by-mail ballots were sent out — check your mailbox if you haven’t already. ✉

It’s a big general election this year, and if you’re like us, you’ve been inundated with proposition ads about issues like gambling, dialysis clinics, and tobacco for several months now.

California is known for its numerous propositions, many of which can be challenging to understand as voters. Luckily, this year there are only seven propositions on the ballot — the fewest since 1916.

One of our SJtoday readers — Cathy J., aka The Proposition Lady — is currently sharing non-partisan, educational videos that explore the pros and cons of each proposition. Pro tip: Cathy recommends hosting ‘proposition parties’ with friends + neighbors to discuss the issues on the ballot. đŸ—Łïž

You can also review proposition guides from CalMatters and KQED.
