We can all agree that the South Bay boasts delicious food from a wide range of eateries — made by even more excellent chefs, bakers, and baristas. In this new series, we will be sharing recipes from local establishments that will get you cookin’ like the pros. 🍴

Our first featured recipe comes from Jiaren Cafe (1171 Homestead Rd., Ste. 140B, Santa Clara), and here is what founder Jaden Zhao had to say about it:

“For this season’s top pick, we are introducing the Tiramisu Dessert Coffee! The sweetness and milk choice is completely customizable up to your sweet tooth — and if you’re craving sweets in the nighttime, nothing will stop you from having this drink, we have it in decaf.”

Ingredients

  • Double shot espresso
  • Mascarpone cheese
  • Heavy cream
  • Egg yolk
  • Milk of your choice
  • Cane sugar
  • Tiramisu concentrate
  • Whipped cream
  • Cocoa powder

Directions

  1. Make the tiramisu cheese first by mixing mascarpone cheese, heavy cream, egg yolk, tiramisu concentrate, and sugar together. Beat the mix with an electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form.
  2. Mix espresso shots, sugar, and milk in a cup as the base.
  3. Scoop the tiramisu cheese on top of the coffee.
  4. Decorate the drink with whipped cream.
  5. Sprinkle cocoa powder on top of the tiramisu cheese and whipped cream.

Happy Hollow Park & Zoo recently welcomed two one-year-old capybara sisters who were born last October at the Abeline Zoo in Texas.

Though capybaras are not an endangered species, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) recommended that they be moved as part of the Capybara Species Survival Plan — which relocates species to other zoos in order to support their genetic health.

Quick capybara facts:
  • They are the largest living rodents in the world.
  • They’re relatives of the guinea pig, and can weigh up to 150 lbs.
  • They can live up to 8-10 years in the wild, 12 in captivity.
Visit the sisters from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Weds.-Fri. + 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekends. (Psst... you can get $5 off your admission ticket if you come in a costume from now until Sun., Oct. 30.)
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Alyson.

Editor’s pick: Man, Tuesday’s earthquake really got me thinking about the big one. It wasn’t until that decent shake that I heard about the MyShake app, developed at UC Berkeley in 2019. Some San Joseans knew about the earthquake about 20 seconds before it hit through a ‘ShakeAlert’ — and I think it might be helpful for all of us to be prepared.
