Each year,Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of January — Jan. 16 this year. The theme for this year is “Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems,” according to The King Center — a nonprofit founded by MLK’s wife, Coretta Scott King, to continue Dr. King’s legacy.
If you have time to dedicate to our community, here are four local volunteer opportunities:
Habitat for Humanity | Learn how to build and repair homes, and volunteer at its ReStore.
The Health Trust | Pack, drive, and deliver for Meals on Wheels, or assist with its HIV/AIDS services.
CityTeam | Help with community outreach, homelessness resources, and housing programs.
Or, participate in:
“The Dream of a King” | Times vary | Children’s Discovery Museum | Storyteller Diane Ferlatte will bring the late civil rights leader’s story to life through history, culture, and music.

The global exhibit, “Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition,” has arrived at Westfield Oakridge Mall and brings you one of “mankind’s greatest artistic achievements” up-close and personal.
Through high-definition photos + special printing techniques, the ceiling paintings of the Sistine Chapelare brought to life, and visitors can observe the intricate details and brushstrokes within each of the 34 frescoes.
We had the chance to view the exhibit over the weekend, and here are our takeaways:
The entrance is a bit hard to find, but it’s outside facing Blossom Hill Road, in between Nordstrom Rack and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse.
Expect the experience to take about an hour.
We were told that special events will pop up occasionally, including live music and paint-and-sip nights, so keep an eye on the website for updates.
The exhibition will run until Sunday, April 30, and tickets start at $22.50 for adults, and $19 for children ages 4-12.
Editor’s pick: Guess what? I’ll be attending my first Sharks game this Wednesday, as they take on the Dallas Stars. I’m also bringing along my housemates + friends, who have also never experienced The Tank before. I have a feeling I’ll be tempted to go to more after this... 🏒
