Every good story needs a soundtrack, and ours is no exception. We could just pick one — but you know we love a deep dive.

Every Noise at Once is Spotify’s algorithmically generated scatter plot of music genres, from “German dark minimal techno” to “neo-trad doom metal” to “classical saxophone quartet,” and literally everything in between.

Here’s where Every Noise sorts some of our favorite local artists, plus national acts from the same genre — perfect for a stroll around San Jose.

San Josean
  • Competitive eater and San Jose native Joey Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes at Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest, winning his 16th title in 17 years. He didn’t manage to beat his world record set in 2021 with 76 hot dogs, but he beat the runner-up by 13 franks. (NBC Bay Area)

  • 3Below Theaters’ 2023 Arthouse Film Festival is showing six themed cinematic series, ranging from “Retro Film and Cult Classics of 1973" to “After School Specials.” Screen times are offered Wednesdays-Sundays until Saturday, Sept. 9.

  • If you’re braving the heat and hiking some local trails — be wary of rattlesnakes. Local Bay Area park officials are warning the public about increased snake sightings during the warm weather and advising people to leave them alone. Hopefully, that comes as a no-brainer. (KRON 4 News)

  • The California State University system may increase undergraduate + graduate school tuition by 6% annually starting in fall 2024. The proposal stems from a need to close a growing $1.5 billion gap between the revenue it collects and the money it spends on student academics. The Board of Trustees will review it on Tuesday, July 11. (San Jose Inside)

I hope everyone had a fun and safe Fourth of July yesterday. The holiday always brings back good memories, despite Independence Day traditions changing over the years for me. This year, I happily spent it with my girlfriend’s family and caught some fireworks sightings all across East Side San Jose — if you know what I mean.
