Despite being early in the 20th century, the 1910s brought new inventions, now-historical landmarks, and notable San Joseans into our world.

Let’s turn back time with another decade of San Jose’s history and peek into the great 408 during this era.

Calling all techies — the city needs your help.

As pedestrian safety continues to be top of mind for San Jose officials, Mayor Matt Mahan has teamed up with the Department of Transportation, Sony, and tinyML Foundation to introduce a new tactic that could help with the city’s Vision Zero initiative.

Introducing: The tinyML Hackathon.

Tiny ML is a technology from the tinyML non-profit organization that utilizes Machine Learning (ML) models to run off network and with little power.

The challenge is to create a method for using Tiny ML to identify + detect the ways pedestrians move through San Jose, in order to predict incidents before they happen.

See the details on project requirements, timeline, and submission.

Oh, and one last thing — the winner can receive up to $3,000 for submitting the best idea. So, what do you say? It’s a great day to save lives.

From the editor
I went to my first Off Nite Show from Mighty Mike McGee and Ato Walker on Monday, and it was so much fun. They host the show out of the beautiful Tabard Theatre and invite local artists, comedians, nonprofits, and more to their stage to put “a little more weekend into your Monday.” It’s something I might want to be a part of... stay tuned.
