Let’s talk brunch, and we don’t just mean bacon and waffles.

We’re discussing dim sum, a Cantonese meal traditionally served in the morning consisting of small sweet + savory plates and accompanied by Chinese tea.

If you’ve never tried it, or just want to explore more — check out these four spots for a well-rounded dim sum experience.

Try traditional

Koi Palace, 768 Barber Ln., Milpitas
Established in Milpitas in 2014, this restaurant serves all the dim sum staples. Order from the detailed menu tableside with great pictures, but don’t miss the Cha Sui Bao (BBQ pork bun) with a sweet, crispy top.

A modern twist

iCHiNA Restaurant, 2855 Stevens Creek Blvd., Ste. 1891, Santa Clara
This contemporary Cantonese restaurant transports you to the lavish dining experiences found in Hong King + China. Enjoy gourmet-style dim sum staples in an opulent dining room. Tea is the staple, but don’t pass up browsing its eclectic cocktail menu.

Serving specialty dumplings

Din Tai Fung, 2855 Stevens Creek Blvd., Ste. 1259, Santa Clara
Named as one of the top ten gourmet restaurants in the world, this restaurant boasts some of the best handmade Xiao Long Bao (soup dumpling) you’ll find in the area. Enjoy the little delights stuffed with truffle, crab, Kurobuta (a premium Japanese pork) — and even sweet taro, red bean, or sesame.

Keep it casual

Serious Dumpling, 49 N. San Pedro St.
Head to San Pedro Square for this casual spot with dim sum staples, as well as Shanghainese dishes. Pair your steamer of dumplings with a sake cocktail or draft beer — happy hour is Tuesday-Thursday, $2 off beers all day, btw. We dare you to try its original giant soup dumpling that comes with a soup-sipping straw.

New study finds that immigrants bring billions into Santa Clara County

Here’s a number for you: $255 billion.

That’s the amount that ~765,800 immigrants contributed to Santa Clara County’s (SCC) gross domestic product in 2021, according to a New Americans in SCC report. In the same year, it was reported that 50.3% of SCC’s business owners were immigrants, while comprising only 40.6% of the county’s population.

This may not come as a surprise — just last December, a study found that San Jose ranked No. 1 as the top US metro area where immigrants look for a better life.

Looking for an easy way to support immigrant business?

Check out Eat San José, a project aimed at spotlighting the richness of our city’s immigrant community through food. More than 50 immigrant-owned restaurant can be found on an interactive map — some with an accompanying story about the restaurateurs.

From the editor
I’ve spent so many Sunday mornings eating dim sum with my family — thanks to my Cantonese grandparents who introduced me to my all-time favorite meal. My personal recommendations (that you can find at any dim sum restaurant) are: Har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai (pork + shrimp wonton dumpling), and fu pei guen (tofu skin roll).
