Encore, encore. Soccer season has arrived and Bay FC is primed and ready to rep San Jose. Our city’s NWSL team will soon kick off their 2025 season at PayPal Park — here’s what you need to know to get in on the fandom.

The games

  • Bay FC’s home opener is on Saturday, March 22 at 7 p.m., and tickets are still available.
  • The team will play 26 matches this season, 13 at home and 13 on the road. Peep the schedule and get yourself there.
  • Theme matches in 2025 will include the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander heritage celebration on Saturday, May 17 and the Pride match on Saturday, June 7. Fans can expect fun merch giveaways at some of these theme games.

The sophomore year vibes

  • The team recently unveiled its 2025 primary kit and the fit is it. The uniform — the club’s first design collab with Nike — is mostly navy, which the team says represents “strength and confidence.” A pattern of nine lines flowing across the jersey “represent the nine counties that bind the Bay Area.” Replica kits are on sale.

News Notes

Tech

Despite pushback from residents, the city approved a plan to install five digital advertising billboards at notable downtown locations. The city will receive a minimum of $20 million over the next 20 years through the ad deal, and can utilize the billboards 15% of the time to promote local events. (ABC7)
Got some peanuts to shell out? Beloved local breakfast spot Peanuts Deluxe Cafe on East San Fernando Street is for sale for $300,000. Owner Joe Huh needs to sell the restaurant so he can spend time with his ailing parents. Suddenly, we’re craving one of those giant omelets. (SFGate)

Civic

Local leaders have launched Homeward Bound, a pilot program to send eligible unsheltered San Joseans to live with family or friends willing to take them in. The “reunification” program will pay for bus and train tickets for relocations, potentially cover treatment and training programs, and conduct post-relocation follow-ups. (The Mercury News)

Development

After much planning, a 220-unit affordable housing development will be built in the SoFa district near Herrold College. The developer plans to maintain the historical significance of the city landmark named after broadcast pioneer Charles David “Doc” Herrold by preserving the facades of two buildings and adding a commemorative display. (San Jose Spotlight)

Edu

Due to a ~$23 million budget shortfall, Franklin-McKinley School District will close three of its schools and layoff staff. The district — home to 5,700+ students in TK through 8th grade — will shutter Los Arboles Literacy & Technology Academy, McKinley Elementary, and Ramblewood Elementary. Three other schools will be reconfigured to serve grades K-6. (The Mercury News)

Traffic

A portion of Post Street in downtown San Jose is now permanently closed to traffic, creating the area’s second pedestrian mall. City leaders hope this will spur more foot traffic, benefit local businesses, and turn Post Street into a public space for local entertainment and gatherings, like San Pedro Square. (ABC7)

Don’t forget to spring forward this Sunday, March 9 — daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m., so turn your clocks forward one hour. This means the sun will start setting at ~7:10 p.m. in San Jose next week, giving you more daytime to play around our city.

The ride has been around (and around) for the past 63 years. The plan is to “bring Danny back with even more wonder and play than ever before,” and make the ride more relevant for the next generation of Happy Hollow visitors.
