Happy Hollow Park & Zoo recently welcomed two one-year-old capybara sisters who were born last October at the Abeline Zoo in Texas.

Though capybaras are not an endangered species , the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) recommended that they be moved as part of the Capybara Species Survival Plan — which moves species to other zoos in order to support its genetic health.

Quick capybara facts:

  • They are the largest living rodents in the world.
  • They’re relatives of the guinea pig, and can weigh up to 150 lbs.
  • They can live up to 8-10 years in the wild, 12 in captivity.

Visit the sisters from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Weds.-Fri. + 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekends. (Pssst... you can get $5 off your admission ticket if you come in a costume from now until Sun., Oct. 30.)
