Planning a getaway? Check out Oahu, HI, a booming center for nightlife, beaches, and remarkable food.
Hey all — City Editor Alyson here. 👋
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed family trips to Hawaii hitting almost every island, but nothing quite compares to the destination that is Oahu. Despite being a pretty large tourism hot spot, I’m here to give you some insider info on local gems that some guides may have missed.
✈️ Why go?
Along with having perfect weather conditions all year round, Oahu offers amazing cuisine, lush scenery, breathtaking beaches, and an aloha vibethat will make you feel welcome everywhere you go.
Outdoors: Take in the views 2,200 feet above the clouds at the mostly shaded, 4.7-mile Kuli’ou’ou Ridge trail.
Shop: Imagine a Hawaiian-themed Valley Fair Mall — that’s Ala Moana Center. And don’t miss the best place for souvenirs at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet, hosted every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Nightlife: Dance the night away at historic Chinatown’s The Manifest, or enjoy a casual drink at Le’Ahi Bar & Grill, open until 2 a.m. daily.
How would you like to wake up to the ocean breeze?

🏅 Next generation of gymnasts to visit SAP
2023 US Gymnastics Championship coming to SAP Center in the fall
Just imagine all the gymnastics talent you’ll see at the SAP Center this August. | Photo by SJtoday staff
Last week, the San Jose Sharks invited US Gymnastics Olympian Samantha Peszek for the puck drop at its match against the Colorado Avalanche.
Why? Well, this August 24-27, the 2023 US Gymnastics Championships will come to the SAP Center and bring the top artistic gymnastics talent to the Tank — just a little under a year before the Paris Olympic Games commence.
And San Jose isn’t new to welcoming world-class gymnasts. We hosted the US Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships in 2011, the US Olympic Team Trials in 2012 + 2016, and four other championships dating back to 2004. So this isn’t our first rodeo.
There will also be a USA Gymnastics National Congress & Trade Show this year — located at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center — which will offer seminars + demonstrations on sports science, fitness, and nutrition.

On Saturday, I took my housemates to 408 Day and had a great time — checked out some sick lowrider cars, swooped some “Los Tiburones” gear from J.Duh, and enjoyed local brews from Fox Tale Fermentation Project + Narrative Fermentations. Check out my experience celebrating San Jose’s unofficial holiday.
