A parking guide for downtown San Jose, CA

Most of us can agree that finding free, cheap, or easily accessible parking in downtown San Jose can be rather difficult at times.

To make your next trip downtown a bit breezier, here’s a brief guide of cheap or free places to park downtown.

🅿️ Parking garages

There are seven parking garages under the City of San Jose’s Downtown Parking Program Park SJ. The first 90 minutes are free at these spots:
At these garages, $1 will be charged for each additional 15 minutes used, with a max total of $25 on the weekdays and $10 on the weekends.

The other garages charge as follows:
  • Convention Center Garage | 150 W. San Carlos St. | Open 24 hours | $1 per 15 min., $24-$30 max.
  • City Hall Garage | 200 E. Santa Clara St. | Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., closed weekends | $1 per 20 min., $20 max.
  • Fourth & St. John Garage | 50 N. Fourth St. | Free to the public at 6 p.m.-10 p.m. weeknights + 6 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends

🅿️ Curbside parking

Most of the city’s meters operate from Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. — excluding city holidays. However, Little Italy’s meters operate 9 a.m.-10 p.m. every day.

Other rates to note:
  • Multi-space meters along Almaden Boulevard + Woz Way charge $7 on non-event days and $5-$25 during events
  • Single-space meters near SAP Center + Diridon Station Area charge $4 on non-event days and $5-$20 during events.

Development
  • Tech giant Microsoft has purchased an empty piece of land in North San Jose for ~$5.6 million right next to the 21.3-acre site it bought in 2021. While there is no definitive plans for the land yet, Microsoft floated the idea of building two five-story data centers. (The Mercury News)

  • On Sunday afternoon, the Golden State Warriors won 120-100 against the Sacramento Kings to clinch the first round of the playoffs. Their next competitor? Another California battle — with the Los Angeles Lakers — will commence tomorrow, May 2, at 7 p.m. (NBC Bay Area)
  • Onto the big league. San Jose State football’s defensive end Viliami Fehoko was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft on Saturday. Fehoko came to SJSU from East Palo Alto and was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

  • The West Valley-Mission Community College District will release a survey this month to collect feedback about how to make higher education more age-friendly for folks 65 and older. The first survey will be for Saratoga residents, and the second (released in June) for Santa Clara residents. (San José Spotlight)
State
  • The California Legislature has designated May 11 as Vietnam Human Rights Day in acknowledgment of the efforts of achieving freedom + human rights for the people of Vietnam. They are encouraging locals to mark the day with ceremonies, discussions, or rallies. Expect plenty of activities with SJ’s large Vietnamese American population. (The Mercury News)

  • Did you know that the honey bee population is rising again in the Bay Area? An East SJ foothills homeowner reported seeing huge swarms of bees in his backyard. Local beekeepers are urging residents to contact pest control or bee rescuers to move the swarms as soon as they see them. (NBC Bay Area)

  • A new travel store, Away, has opened at 377 Santana Row, offering suitcases, travel bags, and duffle bags, as well as other travel necessities. This opening marks the New York-founded brand’s recent expansion into California, and the newest piece of Santana Row’s effort to refresh retailers. (The Mercury News)
