The real stars are San Jose attractions

The zodiac signs as iconic San Jose sights

City Editor Alyson here. Y’all know I love astrology — almost as much as I love San Jose. Last time, we saw which zodiac signs pair best with different San Jose bars. Today, we’re seeing which iconic SJ sights and landmarks resonate with each of the zodiac signs.

♊ Gemini (May 21-June 21): Santana Row

Nothing says playful and bubbly like Santana Row’s lively atmosphere — perfect for a Gemini, the extroverts of the zodiac. With a mix of upscale restaurants, unique bars, and fun shops, there’s no doubt your sign would thrive in this social hub.

♋ Cancer (June 22-July 22): Peralta Adobe House

You stick to your roots, dear Cancer, much like how this historic home stakes its claim at San Pedro Square. As the last remaining structure from El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, it stands as a reminder of our community’s dedication to preserving history in all of its forms.

♌ Leo (July 23-August 22): Winchester Mystery House

The confident, charismatic Leo demands center stage, much like this larger-than-life mansion that draws your eye on Winchester Boulevard. And just like the quirkiness of all the mysterious twists + turns, endless doors, and staircases — you’re an out-of-the-box character.

The San Jose State University Tower.

♍ Virgo (August 23-September 22): SJSU’s Historic Tower Hall

Your sign’s attention to detail and ability to keep a routine serves as a rock to many other zodiac signs, like how San Jose State’s Tower Hall is to its campus. Standing tall since 1910, the Tower has kept students in check and hustling to class with its loud bells (even though they’re speakers now, it still counts).

✈️ How to protect your gut health while traveling

gut-health-travel.jpg
It’s very common for travel to wreak havoc on our digestive system, due to a number of factors from eating new foods to time changes (yes, “gut-lag” is a thing). | Photo by Pendulum
We’ve all been there: a sunny beach, a gorgeous new city, a cute little cabin — and then you feel the dreaded rumble. Your stomach doesn’t feel good, and you have to get to a bathroom, pronto.

Don’t let that happen to you. Before your next summer trip, brush up on five tips to keep your gut happy on the go:

1. Stay hydrated. Stick to (safe) tap or bottled water.
2. Pack probiotics. Pro tip: Sprint to checkout (instead of the bathroom) for 20% off Metabolic Daily with code 6AMCITY.

News Notes
Development
  • Developers are proposing turning the 14-story Bank of Italy into housing instead of renovated offices. Previous plans called for a new green staircase on the side of the building with a garden, social club, and restaurant and a Westbank campus. We will continue to update you on this development. (The Real Deal)
Real Estate
  • New details have emerged about the Garden City Casino + Harry’s Hofbrau redevelopment site — and they include developing 1,027 housing units within a mixed-use village. The rest of the 10.3-acre site would include 13,500 sqft of commercial space + a 1.4-acre park at the center of the development. A construction timeline was not announced. (The Mercury News)
Transit
  • In case you missed it, BART’s board of directors voted to increase fares by 11% over two years, hiking up a $5 fare to $5.55. These extra fees would allow for BART to spend ~7.5% more on maintenance work, energy, and wages. Parking fees will increase as well, but that amount is yet to be determined. (KTVU Fox 2)
Weather
  • We are now in an El Niño pattern — announced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last week — which could mean wetter winter weather. But, don’t fret just yet, in past strong El Niño years, Southern California saw most of the extreme weather. (ABC 7 News)
Plan Ahead
  • Make Music San José, an annual day of free music, has announced its lineup of more than 50 singers and musicians that are set to play at various locations around San Jose on Wednesday, June 21. Find more information about the venues and music genres on the website.
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*

We’re introducing a new trivia series called, “Guess the San Josean,” where we give you 3-4 hints about influential leaders, business owners, artists, and other local movers and shakers in our community.

Before we get into it, we’d like to note that the term “San Josean” doesn’t just apply to people born and raised here. Any individual who has made an impact in our beloved city or has contributed to the diverse, amazing spectacle that is the great 408, we consider a San Josean.

Are you ready? Get set, guess.

Clues:

  • A San Jose native + SJSU alum who grew up in the Guadalupe-Washington neighborhood
  • Helped bring Biblioteca Latino-Americana Branch Library + Washington Youth Center to his neighborhood
  • The first gay Latino to sit on any City Council in Santa Clara County
Think you’ve got it? Make your guess down below — if you guess correctly, you could be featured in an upcoming newsletter.

From the editor
I spent my time outside and in the sun this weekend, including FoodieLand Night Market at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds on Saturday — check out my experience — and Topgolf with my Dad on Sunday. I feel like all I did was eat over the past two days, but that’s my favorite thing to do so... a weekend well spent.
