As Valentine’s Day approaches, why not whip up something sweet for your sweetheart? Lucky for you, the bakers at Luv’s Brownies have a recipe that everyone will love: the brownie cone.

Here’s how to whip up your own version of the sweet treat. And, if you’d like to browse more baked goodies and leave it to the pros, we totally get that, too.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 ounces of unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Dash of baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ¼ cup confectioner’s sugar

News Notes

It’s official: Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium is just one year away — set for Feb. 8, 2026. Stadium renovations are underway, and Mayor Matt Mahan is researching how to prep + activate SJ’s spaces for the big game, including where to install photo backdrops that highlight our city. (The Mercury News)

State

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order calling for California homeowners to create a 5-ft “ember-resisant” zone around their homes to lower fire risk. Cal Fire said details are still murky, but it would be up to local jurisdictions to enforce the rule in fire-hazard areas. (The Mercury News)

Weather

Keep that umbrella handy, this rain isn’t going anywhere. The National Weather Service expects excessive rainfall to continue today, with a 15-40% chance of flash flooding. Storms will be the heaviest tonight, with lighter showers lingering through Valentine’s Day.

Development

The Clara District — Santa Clara’s newest urban neighborhood off Tasman Drive — is rising. About 2,000 apartments are set to open this year, with some residents already moving in. The development could eventually feature up to 4,500 units, plus retail stores, restaurants, and public parks all near public transit. (The Mercury News)

Edu

Franklin-McKinley School District is looking to close three of its schools due to a ~$23 million budget shortfall and declining student enrollment. The 6,000-student district plans to shutter Los Arboles Literacy & Technology Academy, Ramblewood Elementary, and McKinley Elementary at the end of this academic year, and possibly reconfigure its middle schools. Voyager Craft Coffee is moving out of its San Pedro Market location. Its final day at its “special corner” will be Wednesday, Feb. 26, but the shop isn’t traveling too far. Voyager debuted its new spot this week in the Computer & Data Science building at Stanford University.

Closing

Skate, surf, and snowboard brands Billabong, Quiksilver, and Volcom are closing 100+ retail stores across the US, including local stores like the Volcom outlet in Milpitas. The operator of the brands filed for bankruptcy, but the brands will now transition to another operator. (NBC Bay Area)

Arts

This Saturday, Feb. 15, History San Jose will debut “¡MONSTRAS! Female Legends of Latin America,” an exhibition that explores myths surrounding 10 Latin American monsters, based on a podcast by the same name. See it at History Park every Saturday + Sunday, 12 p.m.-3:45 p.m., through Saturday, April 12.

Sports

Let’s go, Bay FC. Single-match tickets went on sale yesterday for Bay FC’s 2025 season, including the home opener against Racing Louisville FC on Saturday, March 22, at Paypal Park. Our city’s NWSL team will play 13 matches at home through mid-October, and 13 on the road.

Something fun is happening in downtown SJ: Unzipped Gardens: Roller Rink + Beer Garden, a new space where you can rent roller skates, take some laps, and enjoy local food trucks.

The temporary attraction, open every weekend through Memorial Day, has taken over the space at 350 S. 2nd St. where a towering art sculpture has sat since 2021. Grab your tickets to the rink — they cost $20 for kids + $25 for adults. Skaters of all levels are welcome.
