Customize every inch of your kitchen in 3D

Presented by Lowe's

Hey SJ, it’s your favorite newsletter team here, full of fresh home inspo after an out-of-this-world virtual experience designing our dream kitchen in 3D with Lowe’s Style Studio.

And we didn’t have to pay a cent.

🥽 What we tried

After scheduling our 45-minute in-store demo, we met an attendant at our local Lowe’s, synced the Apple Vision Pro VR headset, and entered the immersive 3D kitchen for limitless customization (check out our recent reel to see what we saw inside the headset).

We were able to choose from hundreds of colors, textures, materials, and brand selections — from lighting and fixtures to countertops, cabinets, and appliances — all available in-store for your real kitchen.

These free demos aren’t just for media, either. Anyone can try for free at the five participating locations.

🛠️ See before you renovate

Watching the hyper-detailed virtual kitchen change in real time helped us visualize design combinations we might never have tried otherwise.

Blue cabinets against a patterned backsplash? Sounds strange, but we loved it. All-white everything with gold fixtures? Hard to picture on paper, but right there in front of us, we could tell how we felt immediately.

Nice to see it all together before the work starts.

News Notes

Biz

According to the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, downtown San Jose has restored ~90% of its pre-pandemic foot traffic. Compared to major Bay Area hubs like San Francisco and Oakland, SJ has bounced back the quickest, though all three cities are facing high percentages of office vacancies. (The Mercury News)

Real Estate

Developers are planning a 258-unit apartment complex at Santana Row geared toward younger workers. The complex on Hatton Street is slated to open in 2027 and will be the neighborhood’s first new residential project in 10 years. It’ll feature a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments and studios. (The Mercury News)

Development

The city will break ground next month on The Arcade, a seven-story affordable housing complex in South San Jose. The building will have 191 apartments, 128 parking spaces, an outdoor area for barbecues, a computer room, and free VTA passes for residents. Construction should wrap up by December 2027. (KRON)

Open

Start spreading the news. A sandwich shop called Spread debuted this week on Jackson Street in Japantown. The menu includes stacked sandwiches, salads, beer, wine, and sake, plus sweet treats like cookies + ice cream. Visit daily, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Travel

It’s feeling mighty cheery in Terminal B at San José Mineta International Airport. A Christmas in the Park activation paying tribute to SJ’s beloved holiday festival is on display through Thursday, July 31 near baggage claim. Meanwhile, near Gate 30, a Mighty Mallow Crispy Treats kiosk is now open.

Sports

Bay FC defender Caprice Dydasco was named to the June NWSL Best XI of the Month. Dydasco was the league’s No. 1 player in one-on-one situations and has played every minute so far this season. Catch Bay FC at home on Saturday, July 19.

Closing

Alcohol wholesaler Republic National Distributing Co. is laying off 1,756 California employees due to “rising operational costs, industry head winds, and supplier changes,” including 226 workers in Pleasanton, 156 in Morgan Hill, and 104 in Hayward. The company plans to shut down its business across the state on Tuesday, Sept. 2. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Francophiles, celui-ci est pour vous. Shoreline Lake’s American Bistro will celebrate Bastille Day this Saturday, July 12-Monday, July 14 with special menu items like crepes, confit de canard, and steak + frites. Reservations to the laid-back, waterfront fête are encouraged.

State

California love. According to new Crunchbase data, startup investors love the Golden State. In the first half of 2025, about 68% of all US startup funding went to companies headquartered in California — a historically high statistic. Many recipients of big investments this year work in the AI space and hail from our region.

Concert

Hear, hear — this summer’s Levitt Pavilion concert series lineup has grown. Organizers added these concerts to the mix: Psychedelic Latinx with Valley Wolf on Sunday, Aug. 3; Roots Reggae Bash with Groundation on Sunday, Aug. 24; Sabado de Cumbia en el Parque with Bululú on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Plan Ahead

Tickets are now on sale for the Happy Hollow Foundation’s annual Hooray for Happy Hollow fundraiser happening Saturday, Sept. 20. The 21+ event will support Happy Hollow’s ongoing education and conservation efforts and feature animal encounters, a live auction, carousel rides, and small bites from local restaurants.
