Would you like to have a say in naming one of San Jose newest parks ? Well, here’s your chance.

In 2019, San Jose City Council began approving plans to convert a former church and preschool site to a new city park in West San Jose. This park will occupy a 1.9-acre site on the north side of Payne Ave. between San Tomas Expwy. + Winchester Blvd.

Last summer, the city allowed members of the public to vote on potential park names and conjured up a few (the most popular choice being “Esperanza Park”), but many did not meet the city’s naming requirements.

This year, the city decided to open another survey asking the public to choose from 15 eligible names that were suggested in 2021. Some unique options are: “Havana Midfield,” “Tropicana,” and “Parque de los Mariposas.” 🦋

Other exciting features about the unnamed park coming soon:

  • A play area that will include San Jose-specific designs on its play structures.
  • An expanded community garden with gathering areas and more multi-user space.
  • A half-court basketball court and flexible paving area to host movie nights and yard games.
  • Game tables, fitness stations, and a perimeter walking path around the park.
  • An 18-space parking lot and drop-off area, expandable for a future community center.

After the survey closes, the top ranked names will be reviewed by the Parks and Recreation Commission later this spring, with the City Council adopting the official name this summer.

Use the button below to place your vote , but do it quick — the city will only be accepting suggestions until 5 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 4. 🌳
