We love parties + parades, but Pride can be about so much more.

Celebrate love in all its forms by supporting San Jose’s LGBTQ+ community and giving back to these five local charities and nonprofits.

Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center | 501(c)(3) nonprofit

  • Started in 1981, this center serves as a resource space for Silicon Valley’s LGBTQ+ community and allies by providing recovery + peer discussion groups, HIV testing, and more.
  • The center hosts weekly game nights, story times, meditation sessions, and book discussions.
  • Donate or volunteer.

The LGBTQ Youth Space | Nonprofit

  • As part of the Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley, this program serves LGBTQ+ and youth allies ages 13-25 who live in Santa Clara County.
  • Its free drop-in services + counseling include support groups, art workshops, and mental health services.
  • Donate.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) San Jose Peninsula | Support group

  • Founded in 1973, this organization supports, educates, and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community and their families, friends, and allies.
  • This group offers online support groups, booklets + brochures, and even a scholarship program.
  • Become a member, volunteer, or donate.

Outlet | Nonprofit

  • As a program of the Adolescent Counseling Services of Santa Clara + San Mateo counties, Outlet aims to empower LGBTQ+ youth through social and therapy groups, mental health and counseling services, and other educational resources.

BAYMEC Community Foundation | 501(c)(3) nonprofit

  • This organization works to foster inclusive discussions around LGBTQ+ inclusion, provide educational resources, and preserve Silicon Valley’s LGTBQ+ history and culture.
  • BAYMEC hosts speaker series featuring local LGBTQ+ influencers and leaders and maintains Queer Silicon Valley, a digital resource for our region’s queer history.

Civic
  • Mayor Matt Mahan’s final draft of San Jose’s budget was released, which outlines his plans on allocating $5.2 billion for the next fiscal year beginning in July. The City Council will vote on it next Tuesday, June 13, so stay tuned for our budget breakdown. (San José Spotlight)
Development
  • The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved a 30-unit interim housing complex, which will serve unhoused families for three to six months. This housing, funded by Project HomeKey, will be located on the corner of Lawrence Expressway + Benton Street. A construction timeline has not been announced. (The Mercury News)

  • Viva Parks has begun its summer programming with free events happening downtown weekly. Enjoy painting sessions, craft activities, luchador entertainment, and outdoor movies — see the full schedule.

  • This month, two baby red-ruffed lemurs were born at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo — marking the first to be born at the zoo since 2009. The two critically endangered pups don’t have names yet, but the park will soon set up a contest for people to share their ideas. (The Mercury News)

  • The Naglee Park PorchFest will return Saturday, June 17, 3-7 p.m., and bring bands and neighborhood musicians to 10 different locations. The musical caravan will perform a different show every 35 minutes, and be followed by six food trucks.

  • Burlington Coat Factory recently leased 30,300 sqft of a building that will be shared with Sprouts Farmers Market at 375 N. Capitol Ave. The timeline for both of the retailers’ grand openings has not yet been announced. (The Mercury News)

  • Ahead of the California Clasico game on Saturday, July 1, the San Jose Earthquakes announced that Bay Area rap icons Too $hort, Mistah FAB, and LaRussell will be the halftime show as part of a 50-year celebration of hip-hop. Tickets are still available.

  • As part of the Winchester Mystery House’s celebrations for 100 years of tours, the mansion will open its doors for 13 hours straight on Friday, June 30. Tours will be available from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. and tickets are on sale now.
