In San Jose’s most recent point-in-time count, the city’s homeless population decreased by ~500 people , and city officials are looking to keep that trend going.
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, four projects were approved that would offer ~300 interim homes for San Jose’s unhoused community. Here’s the breakdown:
🚐 Safe parking site
- Location: A 6.3-acre site at 1300 Berryessa Rd.
- Cost: $24 million over five years
- Details: The industrial site will contain 85 RV spaces and 35 car spaces.
🏘️ Tiny homes
- Locations: Cerone VTA Yard + Cherry Avenue
- Cost: $17 million over five years
- Details: Funding will come from state dollars, and each site will contain 100 tiny homes.
🏠 Temporary shelter
- Location: A 2-acre site on Via Del Oro Street + San Ignacio Avenue
- Cost: $3.4 million annually
- Details: An anonymous philanthropist will donate sleeping cabins for the city to fund, design, and operate for five years.
